Anticovid drug 2DG medicine:

An anti covid drug 2DG known as 2-deoxy-D-glucose has been developed by INMAS (Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences) and DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation's) laboratories. They have synthesized and got the copyrights for it. The team discovered that 2 DG shows freeze the virus spread in the body, they approached DCGI (Drugs Controller General of India) for a clinical trial. In May 2020, they got permission and completed the 2 phase clinical trial by the end of October 2020; the results had an immense effect on the virus. Thereby DRGO planned to use the Anticovid drug 2DG on covid patients as the drug showed excellent results during the Phase II and phase IIb trials. After the Phase II trial’s successful results, DCGE permitted for Phase III trial in December 2020. This phase III lasts till March 2021. This phase includes 27 covid-1 hospitals across the country: TamilNadu, Utter Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Delhi. At the end of phase III, covid patients showed remarkable improvement in their health and free from oxygen supplement within 3 days. The patients who participated in Phase II, Phase IIB, and Phase III clinical trials have been recovered from the Covid-19. 2DG worked on patients as expected, and patients showed betterment and faster recovery within 3-4 days of taking the medication..

What is 2-DG?

On 9th May 2021, DRDO chairman DR.Sathesh Reddy declared that the 2DG drug could be used for emergencies from 11th May 2021. After the approval, labs will start producing the drugs. Soon, they will be available in markets for everyone. Dr.Reddy’s Laboratories collaborated with CCMB (Center for Celluar and Molecular Biology) to expedite the manufacturing. 

It will be readily available in hospitals, pharmacies, and online, Dr.Suthir Chandhan said. 

Using 2DG as the primary medicine, commonly known as standard care, will be more beneficial for Covid-19 patients regardless of the infection stage and bring them to everyday life within a very short time span.

What is DRDO medicine?

 DRDO is an anticovid drug 2DG is like glucose. Once we injected the solution into the body, it spreads across the body and halts the virus from spreading further, it destroys the protein’s production of the virus, and also it helps to stop the growth of the Covid virus. Once the medicine freezes the virus, it will start to repair the infected lungs, making the patient independent from the manual oxygen supply and virus-free. 2DG drug was formulated as a powder that was consumed orally by dissolving it in water.

Is DRDO medicine available?

This medicine has been made available from 9th May 2021. 2DG drug price hasn’t been finalized yet, but it could be range from 500-600 according to the production of the drug. The price range might change depending on the raw materials of the medicine and production cost, and it could be imported to other countries as India have enough raw materials of the drug productions

Side effects:

An anticovid drug 2DG has been used on almost 500 patients with various stages of the infection. The stages include a beginning, moderate and severe. All covid patients showed only benefits, and there are no side effects were found so far. An anti covid 2DG drug is safe for all age groups without any side effects. 

So we can conclude that 2DG doesn’t have any side effects, said by Dr.Suthir Chandhana. And doctors hope that 2DG will work effectively on infected patients and helps to put an end to the pandemic.
